NEWS YOU CAN USE:

The Palo Alto Office of Emergency Services visited several PAHC sites and shared this information to help us prepare for a potential earthquake or other emergency:

Earthquake & Emergency Preparation Tips

1. Create a Kit.

If an earthquake, storm, fire or other disaster strikes our community, we might not have access to food, water and electricity for days, or even weeks. By taking some time now to store emergency food and water supplies, you can provide for your entire family.
Keep the items that you would most likely need during an evacuation in an easy-to carry container such as a large, covered trash container, a camping backpack or a duffle bag.

Below is a list of what should be included in your kit:
Water: 3 gallons per person.
First Aid Kit: Large bandages, antiseptic wipes, anti-bacterial ointment, etc.
Non-Prescription Drugs: Aspirin, antacid, anti-diarrhea medication, etc.
Tools and Supplies: Portable radio, fire extinguisher, flashlights, batteries, non-electric can opener& gloves.
Non-Perishable food: canned goods, tuna, crackers, soup, dried fruit, peanut butter, granola bars, etc.
Sanitation: Toilet paper, feminine supplies, bleach, plastic garbage bags, soap, etc.
Clothing and Bedding: Include a towel and one complete change of clothing and footwear per person.
Special Items: Remember family members with special requirements, such as infants (diapers, formula, etc.) and prescription drugs, insulin, eye glasses, etc.
Important Family Documents: Keep records in a waterproof, portable container (bank account numbers, passports, wills, insurance policies, etc.).
Cash: Banks may be closed and ATMs may not be in operation for several days.

2. Create a disaster plan.

Meet with your family and discuss why you need to prepare for disaster. Explain the dangers of fire, severe weather and earthquakes to children. Plan to share responsibilities and work together as a team. Discuss the types of disasters that are most likely to happen and explain what to do in each case.
• Decide where your family members will meet after a disaster or emergency.
• Ask an out-of-state friend to be your "family contact" whom everyone will call if you are separated after a disaster.
• Write down all of these contact numbers and information on family emergency contact cards.
